Oysterponds Historical Society: Preserving the Heritage of Orient and East Marion

Owner

Tucked away in the quiet village of Orient, the Oysterponds Historical Society is dedicated to keeping the stories of the North Fork alive. Since 1944, OHS has worked to preserve and share the rich maritime and agricultural history of Orient and East Marion.

A Living Connection to the Past

The Society’s collection tells the story of everyday life on the North Fork, with over 60,000 artifacts including letters, diaries, tools, textiles, and works of art. Many of these treasures were donated by families who have lived in the area for generations. Walking through the exhibits feels like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of shipbuilders, farmers, and artists who once called this beautiful stretch of Long Island home.

Historic Buildings and Exhibits

The OHS campus includes several historic buildings, including the Village House and the Webb House, both lovingly restored and filled with period furnishings. Seasonal exhibitions showcase pieces from the collection, each one helping to bring the area's unique history to life. Whether it’s early American furniture, maritime artifacts, or local artwork, there’s always something new to discover.

A Gathering Place for the Community

OHS isn’t just about preserving history—it’s about sharing it. Throughout the year, the Society hosts exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and events that invite both residents and visitors to explore the North Fork’s heritage in fresh and engaging ways.

Plan Your Visit

The historic buildings are typically open to the public during the summer months, with special events and exhibitions throughout the year. For up-to-date hours, programs, and event information, visit the Oysterponds Historical Society website at oysterpondshistoricalsociety.org.
