Landcraft Gardens of Mattituck
Nestled in the heart of Long Island's North Fork wine region, Landcraft Gardens of Mattituck offers a delightful and unique botanical experience. Established in 1992 by visionaries Dennis Schrader and Bill Smith, this 17-acre property surrounding a circa 1840 farmhouse has been transformed into a nonprofit botanical garden dedicated to horticultural excellence.

A Vision Realized
Schrader and Smith envisioned a garden showcasing unusual and little-known plants, providing an environment for experimenting with exotic plant materials. Their goal was to create a uniquely American garden that blends different styles and influences, resulting in a diverse and exuberant landscape.
The Gardens
The property features several distinct garden areas, each with its own character. Some gardens blend seamlessly with the natural landscape, while others juxtapose unusual materials and plants. Benches, low walls, and seats are thoughtfully placed throughout, encouraging visitors to sit and immerse themselves in nature. Winding walking paths lead guests through a variety of plantings, offering delightful surprises at every turn.
Location and Climate
Situated between the Long Island Sound, Mattituck Creek, and the Peconic Bay, the gardens benefit from an unusually long growing season. This unique microclimate allows for the cultivation of a wide range of plant species, including tropicals and other exotic varieties.
